Street food stalls are intimidating. For the most part there are no signs and no real way of knowing what you’re ordering – just a glass divider between you, the vendor and the food.
We’ve been on the road for almost a month now and think we have mastered the technique of ordering:
1. Slowly approach the stall, giving your most convincing “I’m happy you’re here, I’m starving” look
2. Wait for this look to be fully appreciated by the vendor
3. Smile and indicate the number of people eating with your fingers. No words are necessary at this point, but I find it makes me feel less awkward to say “two” while holding up my two fingers.
4. Take a seat at their table, cross your fingers and hope for the best.
It usually ends up looking something like this. Simple, delicious and it usually costs around the equivalent of a $1.
