This is Storforsen, which roughly translates to the ‘grand rapids’. It is one of the biggest waterfalls in Europe, and I blushingly have to admit that I’ve never visited them before – even though I grew up just 200 kilometers away.
The falls themselves are very impressive: great masses of water hurl themselves down a long, long rapid. It’s like if someone had tilted the Niagara falls to make it recline a bit. I also liked how the surrounding tourist infrastructure was set up: you get to walk very close to the waterfall without ever having clusters of tourists in your camera viewfinder.
If all the local attractions I’ve skipped over the years turn out this good, maybe it would be a good idea to hang around Sangis a bit more!
