Indonesia is a big place. Huge, actually. It spans three time zones, is comprised of roughly 17,000 islands (only 6000 are inhabited) and has a coastline that is 54,716 km long. It is home to 255 million people. Over half this amount live on the island of Java, one the most populated places on the planet, which is one of the reasons we are not there.
We opted to explore northern Sumatra, home of the fun-loving Batak people. We heard they were a good time. We were first introduced to their culture at dinner a few nights ago. They put on song and dance shows for the guesthouses that line the lake. We happened to catch one in the lobby of our guesthouse, the Samosir Cottages.
The troupe had incredible vocals, simple but elegant dance moves and best of all, they love to entice slightly drunk foreigners to join their dance. Neither Martin nor myself were pulled into the dance (which is great because I’ve forbidden Martin to dance in public). We were able to sit back and watch the Dutch and British people wiggle their way awkwardly through twenty minutes of side shuffling and finger waving.
Good stuff.
