The Batak people of northern Sumatra are well-known for a variety of handicrafts. Ulos Batak, or Batak Blankets, is one such handicraft. We were exploring the island by motorbike today and stopped at a tourist site which offered entry into a traditional Batak house. Inside we found the loom pictured above, which looked eerily similar to the one I used in Sweden.
Those of you who are steady readers might recall that I was on a quest in Sweden to weave the world’s most beautiful carpet using my mother-in-law’s ancient loom. My carpet took two days to complete. Their blankets take up to a month. I think they win.
