Traveling together as a couple means that you spend 24 hours together every day. Hence, it is pretty hard to find the time to sneak away and buy inspired surprise birthday presents without your partner noticing. The solution was that Jaime got to pick her present herself. She decided that she wanted a hand-carved Batak Magic Stick.
Acquiring it took hard and long bargaining. The saleswoman, citing a pressing need for money for her son’s education in Jakarta, started with a bid of 2.2 million rupiah (220 US dollars). We walked away from that, but after posting a quick phone call to her husband, she relented and offered it to us for a mere million. Sensing that she was desperate, we hit her with a disgustingly low counter offer. In the end, we walked away with the most beautiful stick ever, less 900 000 rupiah. But what a stick.
