There are reptiles that give me the creeps. Geckos are my buddies, but get much bigger and I start to get a little squirmy. Iguanas make me feel yucky. Take that yucky and multiply it by a really big number. The result: Komodo dragons.
They are deadly, scary creatures. Here are some facts we learned about them today:
-
They can live up to and beyond (given the right diet) 50 years.
-
They can go a year without eating.
-
Their diet consists of buffalo, deer, monkey and (the occasional) human.
-
The most recent human kill was 3 months ago.
-
The only thing they don’t eat is horns, hair, hoofs and grass. They laugh in the face of vegetarianism. It’s all meat, all the time for these beasts.
-
They kill with a single bite to the leg of their prey. Bacteria live in their saliva which will kill a buffalo in a week or two. All they have to do is follow and wait.
-
They can smell blood up to 5 kilometers away.
-
They’re nasty, nasty predators.
