Cotton is the call for a second wedding anniversary gift. As we happen to be in a great region for ikat weaving, we bought a few beautiful pieces in celebration of our two years together.
The first piece, the red one shown above, was bought in Bena, a tribal village outside of Bajawa. Based on its color, I’m fairly certain it is synthetically dyed, but it’s beautiful nonetheless. The second and third pieces were bought from a Moni local named Jenny. She bent us over with her prices (we all know of my brilliant negotiating skills), but the pieces we bought from her were exquisite.
The piece shown in the large picture is a sarong.. Each color is derived from local materials. The black is dyed with soot, the yellow and red is from the bark of a local tree. The structure of the piece is basically a large tube that serves various functions for the locals. They (both men and women) fold and wrap it around their wastes as skirts. In the cold they pull it over their shoulders and create a hood for their head. Though it is meant to be used this way, we spent too much money on it for any of these functions. It will find it’s way, along with the third piece we bought (a small table cloth pictured below) into our future home. Maybe the sarong can be a tablecloth or wall hanging?
Any suggestions?
