It’s a fact in my book that short term travel makes me loose weight (unless, of course, the destination is Sangis – sorry Birgitta but I get fat in Sweden). I’ve always enjoyed the weight-loss quality of short term travel, but what holds true for me on a short term trip does not apply on the15 month-er we’re currently on.
Sure, dropping muscle mass is no problem, just sit on a bus/train/taxi/airplane all day and the muscle weight falls off. Unfortunately the body has a nasty habit of maintaining balance. It likes to give something after it takes something else away, so the trade off is a gain of unwanted fat. I’ve now turned into what I call an ABOT, or Atrophied Ball of Toxin.
Blogtail hour is of course the culprit there. A hard day’s travel is almost always justifiable cause for a beer (or five) when sitting with the computer. This, followed by the delicious fried food we’ve been eating, well, you get the point. Flabbiness abounds.
It’s for this reason that Martin and I have just joined a gym here in Kathmandu. Those of you at home with access to daily exercise are a lucky bunch indeed. It took being away from it (and turning into an ABOT) to turn me into a born-again exercise junkie. It’s time to jog/stair climb/elliptical this jiggly shiz back to where it came from!
