Those of you who live within reach of a supermarket that offer you exotic food choices such as fresh mozzarella, frozen pizzas, cool whip and tortillas should count yourselves a lucky bunch, indeed. Kathmandu markets supply a surprisingly good array of food but miss the mark when it comes to international food (and yes, I am counting cool whip as an amazing American food that I miss).
That being said, I was struck by a huge Mexican food craving a few nights ago. This set in motion a city-wide hunt for ingredients that just plain don’t exist here. If I was going to have my tacos, I was going to have to make everything – from scratch.
I’m happy to say that the resulting meal was delicious, but took me 3 hours to make. It tasted suspiciously like Nepalese food, but Martin was kind enough to not point this out.
Tonight’s plan (after my plain refusal to ever make anything that takes 3 hours) is to eat at the Japanese food restaurant up the road from us. It’s rumored that they fly their fish in from Thailand. So yes, as strange as it may sound, we’ll be feasting on raw fish in the Himalayas tonight.
