Tradition on this trip dictates that we buy items that are either incredibly awkward to carry or that we will find hard to use once we get home. Our Kashmiri carpet, bought in Dharamsala, is an example of the latter. With pets and kids in our future, a mostly white carpet just doesn’t make sense.
Another good example of our awkward purchase is the small library we carry around. A good rule of thumb when traveling is to finish one book before buying another. That way you never have to carry more than one book. We seem to have a problem with that. As this post shows, I once counted 15 books in our backpacks. I’m not kidding. It was ridiculous.
Well, I think I’ve trumped all awkward purchases with our newest additions. Our new stools. I’ve been drooling over these since arriving in Nepal. They’re hand made from local materials (yes, that is a bicycle tire tied to the bottom of them). It’s all I see the locals sitting on – and I had to have them.
So, now that I bought two, Martin posed a very relevant question. What the heck are we going to do with them? We’re leaving Kathmandu in three weeks for five more months of travel. Well, I haven’t figured that one out yet (most likely we’ll be sending a really big package home). Until then, you can bet your a#@ I’ll be sitting on my new favorite (awkward) purchase while figuring it out.
