The act of obtaining and keeping currency in Myanmar is a sometimes bizarre and cumbersome task. For starters, there’s the exchange rate. The official rate is 6 Kyat (pronounced ‘chyat’) for one US dollar. In a guesthouse or on the street, the going rate is closer to 1,000 Kyat for a dollar.
To make things more interesting, the largest denomination of the Kyat is the 1,000 note. Since the exchange rates are better in Yangon than elsewhere in the country, we exchanged a bunch before we hit the road. We’re now carrying around ridiculous bricks of cash, which makes us feel like total high rollers – it’s not unusual for us to spend six grand on lunch alone!
We’re still trying to figure out why the notes have to come in different sizes though.
