We’ve reached Myitkyina, the capital of the Kachin province of Myanmar. This is about as far north as you can go in this country without special permits. It has somewhat of a frontier feel to it, located as it is at the Chinese border. A vast and unexplored wilderness spreads out north of here: researchers recently found a whole new species of deer here, and more are believed just waiting to be found.
We would love to travel further north, but a permit takes three weeks to arrange. We hope to spend a few days here exploring the local villages and their surroundings: the Irrawaddy river has its beginning here, and a number of hill tribes call it home. After that, we’ll head south, either by train or boat.
The town itself is not much of a charmer, but it is nice to be out of the tourist circuit. People seem genuinely surprised to see our strange faces, and every meal is an adventure in its own right.
