A lazy river cruise down the Irrawaddy is considered one of the highlights of any adventure in northern Burma. The problem is that it’s the dry season, and the water is very low.
Nevertheless, we boarded the ‘Fast Boat’ from Bhamo to Katha, the northernmost point for meaningful travel at this time. We only had time to snap a few pictures and get settled in our seats before we ran aground on a sand bank. The captain and his crew employed a number of tactics to get us out of this pickle – including having everyone on board, foreigners included, rock the boat from side to side. We ended up hitting about six or seven sand banks, but each time we somehow managed to clear them. It was actually a lot of fun.
Further downstream, the going got a bit easier. It is a beautiful boat ride, something we hope shows in the picture gallery below.
