The Winter Olympics are on televisions everywhere right now – well, almost, everywhere. Myanmar seems to have missed the boat on the whole thing, so you don’t hear a world about it over here. If it weren’t for my Facebook feed, I’d have no idea the Games were going on.
I say all this because last night I pretty much won Myanmar’s first gold medal (some might say coin, but I say bah! to that). You see, Martin and I were eating at our favorite BBQ restaurant here in Mandalay. Our meal was followed by a grab-bag opportunity. Chinese New Year passed two days ago and this little grab-bag was a way of celebrating. Each player has the opportunity to pull out an envelope that lists out a denomination of money the restaurant pays out as a gift. The crown-jewel of the winnings, however, is a golden coin with a beer logo on it. Martin pulled from the bag the previous night and instantly became the family bread winner. We finally had an income for the first time in over nine months: twenty whole cents.
My pull was oh-so-much-better. I didn’t win money. Oh no. I won the beer logo gold coin, a fact I made clear to the entire restaurant by yelping and hugging the dumb little thing (yes, there was beer involved).
Yeah, we’re not going back to that restaurant tonight.
