We’ve found that taking a stroll in India means that sometimes you come across a dead dog. It happens, you feel a little gross about it, then you move on. It’s just one of those things that you deal with.
Today’s stroll along the Brahmaputra river in Guwahati brought an all together different dead-thing experience. The river is low, which allowed us to walk along the soggy river bed. While walking and discussing our next travel move we both noticed this figure embedded in the muck. Faster than you can say “Dead Baby,” we’d launched into each other’s arms with a yelp.
Further investigation revealed that it was not human – rather an effigy of a human figure made from reeds. There were a few of these things strewn around, prompting us to think they must be used in some sort of ritual.
My heart was still racing 10 minutes after the encounter. Dogs are one things, but humans (babies, no less) are all together different.
