We’ve come to the state of Arunachal Pradesh in northeast India for two things: the Tawang Gompa and the Lake of No Return. We haven’t made it to the lake yet, so more on that later. We have, however, just spent two days in Tawang checking out the town and its Gompa, or Buddhist monastery.
The Tawang Gompa is reportedly the second largest in the world. Built like a medieval fortress, the monastery is home to nearly five hundred Buddhist monks. And what lucky monks they are.
As far as scenic locations go, you don’t get much better than this. The complex is built on the edge of a steep ridge, overlooking the Tawang valley. Oh, and that is surrounded by the Himalayas. Like I said, its a spectacular place.
Recent restoration to the Gompa interior has created a kaleidoscope of colorful Buddhist imagery. A small museum is host to a number of relics and Buddhist items of interest. Our favorite? A monk’s foot prints rubbed into a plank of wood. Seriously, how long would take to rub that kind of thing into wood? Your guess is as good as mine.
