Introducing Mom to the Swedish Sauna

We all (and by all, I mean anyone that isn’t Scandinavian) know what a proper sauna is. It’s a hot room that you sit in for a while, then move onto something more stimulating, right?

Well, it took marrying a Swede to realize that I knew exactly nada-nothing-zilch about saunas. They really know how to do it here – wood fired heat, billows of back-stinging heat and a number of cool-down sessions (often with a little chilled adult beverage of choice) – make the experience something both painful and amazing at the same time.

I shared this experience with my Mom, who flew into Sweden for two weeks, and I’ve gotta say – I’m quite proud of her. She’s a total convert. Way to go, Mom! You handled the burn like the best of ‘em.

Oh, I miss a real sauna! I, like Martin probably did, grew up with a sauna in the back yard, fired with birch…there’s nothing like looking at the stars on a cold winter night with the steam billowing off you! I didn’t know Swedes had saunas, as well! Saunas are the true mark of civilisation…the only way to bathe!

Saunas are more a Northern Swedish thing than a Swedish thing. Our saunas are basically Finnish or Siberian ones. Apart from Family and friends, the Bastu (sauna) is what I miss most when I’m elsewhere.
