Believe it or not: these carp were once the glowing coals of a fire set to roast the prophet Abraham alive. God Almighty understandably did not like to have his prophet roasted by infidels, so he created a spring underneath the fire. The result was an eruption that turned the coals into fish and flung Abraham away (he landed on a bed of roses, neatly placed there by God – thanks God!).
The end result of this divine intervention is Urfa’s charming center: a system of ponds and gardens, bordered by a Bazaar and a large rose garden. Many pilgrims come to Urfa just to hang out in the garden and feed the fish which are sacred now. Anyone that tries to kill them is struck blind.
We didn’t interview any of the fish, but a reputable source say that they believe it’s much better being a holy carp than a prophet-roasting ember.
Meanwhile, we’re enjoying Urfa. It’s nice, hot and chock full of photo opportunities.
