Most of the countries we’ve traveled through on this one-year trip have one thing in common: sad excuses for wine. While they certainly can be forgiven for this, the fact remains that we’ve missed wine on our diet. Beer is nice (as I’ve reported about in a number of posts), but good wine can really transform a meal or a situation into pure magic.
The above wine is called Buzbag. I’m not going to go into the various puns available in regards to this name, but I’d like to tell you this: it’s a really nice wine. It’s made out of two uniquely Turkish grapes: Öküzgözü and Boğazkere. Its taste is pretty soft, with a nice tannic finish that suits any meat dish. It is also pretty low on alcohol (12%), which makes it compatible with spicier types of food. Yum.
We’ve also stumbled upon this wine: Leona (not to be confused with the Californian wine house of the same name), a successful blend of the indigenous Öküzgözü grape and Shiraz. All kinds of things could go wrong with this mix but the winemakers somehow managed to keep it together, producing an excellent table wine – the kind of wine you’d want to serve to your best friends at a decadent picnic in your favorite spot.
Unfortunately we’re right now traveling through the most conservative part of Turkey, where wine is hard to come by. Judging by what we’ve found so far, Turkey could well be a wine-lover’s paradise.
