Bangkok is a great place to find such contrast...and scenes that look straight out of a movie set. If you're stuck getting visas in Bangkok - take the ride north to Ayuttaya during that time. The old ruins are fantastic & the food at the night market can't be beat. [img title="Buddhas Buddhas Everywhere" alt="Our fourth day on our Easy Ride through Vietnam's central highlands brought us to this temple. The monks were sculpting every Buddha in wood - over 500 in all - in an attempt to become an Unesco World Heritage site. Each Buddha was unique and must have taken these hard working monks a ton of time to complete. It was a truly special place. If there is one thing in Vietnam you must do - it's to check out Halong Bay. Their displays were interactive, beautifully constructed and unlike anything we'd ever seen. What I didn't realize, until an hour before we left town, was that it's beaches are beautiful as well. It was the absolute best way to see the bay. Most people join large boat tours that start from Hanoi - don't do it that way, if you have the option. Our advice is to get yourself to the bay on your own & book a smaller tour yourself. It's a much better way of seeing the amazingness that is Halong Bay." src="http://www.seatsofourpants.com/wp-content/flagallery/vietnam/thumbs/thumbs_jaime-in-halong-bay.jpg"][img title="Martin and the Suspension Bridge" alt="You see these all over the Vietnam's Central Highlands - suspension bridges that look like they're held up by a few knots and some chewing gum. Walking back to our drivers, we were stopped by this little fellow, who is apparently the world's cutest salesman. His mother weaves shawls, which we were obliged to buy two of. Cuteness sells well.
